Citizens must be heard in EU Treaty reform
Statement on EU Treaty reform
Because of the globalization of economy and neo-liberal politics the development of the society and economy has resulted in increasing social inequality in Europe. Citizens expect of the EU decisions and policies that will change course for a more equal and just Europe.
Social Europe has to be strengthened. Change in this direction can only be achieved by increasing democracy. The European Union should listen to its citizens.
The way the European Treaty reform is carried out is significant. Representatives of the 15 European Left parties gathered together in Helsinki for the NELF Forum on 5—7 October 2007 demand that a referendum on the adoption or rejection of the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe be organized in all Member States where it is constitutionally possible.
