Statement by Left Alliance Party Council 1.12.2002

The Iraq issue must be solved under UN guidance

The Left Alliance believes that it important to solve the Iraq issue within the UN framework.

The threat of a unilateral military strike by the US and UK jeopardizes the already fragile stability in the Middle East and increases the risk of the use of weapons of mass destruction.

The Left Alliance believes that Finland must work strongly within the EU and the UN to avoid the planned military operation against Iraq. The Iraqi people have already suffered enough under Saddam Hussein's dictatorship that has lasted for more than twenty years, and the violations of human rights it has entailed. The war would further worsen the condition of the Iraqi people.

Saddam Hussein must, without any preconditions, comply with all the UN Security Council resolutions on the unimpeded inspection of Iraqi weapons programs. The Left Alliance believes that the international community has the full right to destroy all weapons of mass destruction they may find.

Finland must work actively within the EU towards starting new multilateral negotiations on total nuclear disarmament within the framework of the UN.
